Today's Number

To start math off this morning, first graders had to figure out "Today's Number" by playing a game of Guess My Number.  The only hint given to the students was that it was a number between 1 and 20. They quickly learned to ask smart questions that would eliminate more than just one single number, for example, is the number less than 12?  After ascertaining that "Today's Number"was 9, they were then given the challenge to find as many ways as possible to make the number 9.  They could use addition and/or subtraction.  They were encouraged to use math tools such as counters, number lines and number charts.  They came up with many, many ways to make 9!

Five -In-A-Row Subraction

First grader students are working hard at their subtraction skills via the fun of this game! They rolled their dice, found the difference between the two numbers and covered the answer on their game board.  The students are using many good strategies to solve the problems.

Our First Flight

First graders took their first flight this afternoon as part of our Holidays Around the World unit.  They waited in line patiently to board the plane bound for Israel, found their seats and enjoyed an inflight video about Hanukkah. After arriving in Israel students had their passports stamped and looked at a world map to mark exactly where they had flown to.

Flynn Workshop

First Graders had the great opportunity to work with a teacher from the Flynn Theater to prepare for the show that we will be seeing, Charlotte's Web.  They learned about the main characters and their traits.  They explored how actors and actresses might choose to portray their characters in different ways.
