A Little Help from our 4th-Grade Friends

Today we had some special 4th-grade friends visit our classroom to help us log in and navigate the Pebblego site!  We are using this site to explore a variety of animals and to help us choose which one we each want to do research on and learn more about!  We will then use it as a resource for doing our research.  So exciting!  Thank you so much to Ms. Poncelet's awesome 4th graders!!

Searching for Facts

First graders are about to start an animal research project so we began practicing how to read a passage and pick out the facts.  We read a nonfiction poem about the Chinstrap penguin and searched for, and then highlighted, true facts about this type of penguin.  This group of kiddos caught on very quickly how to do this!

Lots of Measuring Going on in First Grade!

Last week we started a new unit on measurement!  We have been very busy measuring the length of many things in our classroom using different units such as paper clips, linker cubes, and inch tiles.  Today we even measured a collection of fish to determine if they were "keepers" or not!

We even measured our stuffies on Stuffy Day!

Snow Motion Day 1

We were treated to a beautiful morning on the slopes for our first day of Snow Motion!  I didn't have a chance to take many pictures but here are a few!  They all did such a great job!!

Forest Friday!

With much more reasonable temperatures, we ventured outside for another Forest Friday!  Since we have been talking about animals in the classroom, we continued this theme outside.  We gathered at the outdoor classroom and read Stranger in the Woods by Carl R. Sams II and Jean Stoick.  We discovered that a snowman was the stranger in the woods!!  And the kids that built the snowman left treats on it for the animals!  We decided to make out own "strangers" and left some bird seed for any creatures that might find it.  Although the snow wasn't conducive to snowman building, we made some "flat strangers" by making snow angels, as well as some other very creative structures.

Also, a huge THANK YOUR to the families that so kindly gave gift cards to the classroom this past holiday, as some of them went to the purchase of drawstring backpacks that we will use on our outside adventures!
