Halloween-ish Fun!

First graders ended their week with a little bit of Halloween-ish fun!  We read a story called The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything by Linda Williams.  We acted it out with puppets and then did a story sequencing activity.

We read the poem, Five Little Pumpkins, listened to the story Pete the Cat and the Five Little Pumpkins, and watched and learned how to do the American Sign Language signs to the poem!

And we did some super fun Haunted House math with ghosts and jack o' lanterns!!

Growth Mindset vs. Fixed Mindset

First graders have begun learning a little about their brains and the idea of having a growth mindset vs a fixed mindset.  They learned that their brains are "fantastic and elastic"!  That every time we learn something new we actually grow and stretch out brains!  They also recently learned that we all have the choice to have a "growth mindset" or a "fixed mindset" in our daily lives.  A "growth mindset" helps us to see things in a positive way and that when things feel hard we can keep trying and persevere.

We looked at some examples and sorted them as to whether they were part of a growth or a fixed mindset.

We read this book to help us think about using a growth mindset.

We also learned some "mantras" to help us remember to try and always have a growth mindset!

Word Study with a Focus on Short Vowels

This week during our word study time we continued to practice naming and saying the vowel sounds, with a focus on their "short" sounds.  We did some sorting of picture cards, listening carefully for the vowel sound in each word, as well as some activities that focused on the /at/ family of words.

Making Leaf Creatures!!

We read Leaf Man by Lois Elhert and were inspired to create our own leaf people and creatures!  We also had a nice surprise while in The Nest - one of our outdoor learning spaces.  We had the special opportunity to observe an owl for quite awhile perched in a tree, and also saw it swoop down to the ground to catch some prey!!  What a treat!  And what creative kiddos!!!
