Learning About Fractions

This week first graders have begun to learn about fractions.  They have been exploring halves, fourths and even thirds!  They have been introduced to the numerical representation of these fractions, but do not need to be able to write or use them.  The most important thing for them to remember is that fractions are always "fair shares".

Measuring Keepers

Measuring "Keepers"

In math, first graders have been measuring a lot of fish!  Last week they they worked with a collection of paper fish, that were either perch, mackerel, or alewife.  They were told what length each type of fish had to be in order for it to be a "keeper".  Then they put their measuring skills to the test, and measured their whole collection of fish to determine if each one was a keeper or not, and recorded their work.
Today, students worked on fish story problems.  In order to solve the problem, they first built the length of the two fish in the story.  Next, they compared the lengths, and figured out how much longer or shorter one was when compared to the other.  Lots of great math thinking!!
