Greater Than, Less Than, or Equal To??

During math today students learned about the math symbols we use when comparing two numbers.  Not only did we learn the "Greater Than" and "Less Than" symbols, we also learned a new meaning of the equal sign : "the same as".

St. Nikolaus Day

While "visiting" Germany, first graders learned about a tradition celebrated by many German families on Decaember 6th: St. Nikolaus Day!  There are many stories around this saint, but the tradition goes that children leave their shoes or boots outside their doors on the night of the 5th in hopes that St. Nikolaus will fill it with treats before morning time. St. Niolaus is not the same as Santa Claus, and many German families celebrate both.

First graders made some shoes today to see if they could lure St. Nikolaus to visit them, too!

First Flight: Germany

Today was a big day in first grade - we took our first flight on our "Holidays Around the World" trip!! Students grabbed their suitcases and passports and boarded a direct flight to Germany to learn about the holidays and celebrations going on during this time of year in that part of our world.  While we are in Germany we will also learn a little about some of their customs, traditions, and their culture.  Did you know that the tradition of bringing a tree into your house to celebrate Christmas came from Germany?!

The empty airplan awaiting it's passengers.

Passengers waiting to board the airplane; suitcases and tickets in hand.

Finding their seats.

Enjoying some inflight videos on Germany.

Going through customs.

Coloring the German flag.

Looking at the map of the world to see where we came from, and where we landed.

Miss Evenson's Last Day

Today we sadly said goodbye to our UVM student teacher, Miss Evenson.  She has been an amazing help to all of us over the past few months.  We wish her all the luck in the world as she pursues a career as a teacher!

Blanket Fort Day

First graders earned a special reward for all of their expected behavior over the past few weeks!  Fun was had by all during Friday afternoon when they created forts out of blankets and hid in them while doing their math and Choice Time activities.
