Highlights from the Week of May 3

 Here are some highlights from the past week.  First graders are learning lots and spreading kindness!! 

We began our week by making Kindness Rocks to bring the Kindness Rock Garden back to life! 

We began this work by reading this book and connected our kindness rocks to "filling others' buckets".  

 

We started a new unit in math and worked on solving problems about things that come in sets of 2s, 5s, and 10s.  

We began a new unit in Reading which focuses on fiction.  We will be exploring characters, story elements, and themes or lessons we can learn from books. We also got to do a little bit of reading outside at the end of the week when the sun finally came out!

We had another wonderful session with Miss Gigi and created our own camling pictures to look at and use when we need to bring our energy down, focus , or just do a few moments of mindfulness.  

Earth Day

 Before our April break, first graders learned about Earth Day and how important it is to take care of our earth - on Earth Day AND every day!  We brainstormed ways that we could each make a difference and we created special vases as a reminder of our earth and all its natural beauty. 

Observing Tiny Buds on the Trees

 Continuing our study of trees, first graders started learning about how trees make their food, which led us to a discussion about leaves and what is happening on and inside trees right now!  We took our nature journals outside and did some observations and some sketching of the tiny buds that are starting to "wake up and grow".  We will continue to keep an eye on the trees around us and watch what happens as spring progresses!

It Looked Like Spilt Milk...Or Did It???

 First graders recently began a unit on opinion writing and one of our first activities was to read the book, It Looked Like Spilt Milk by Charles G. Shaw, and create some of our own "spilt milk" paintings.  After creating our paintings with white paint and string, students then decided what their art looked like in their opinion and wrote about it.  They added a few details with a black marker to help others see what they saw in their artwork and then wrote their opinion and two to three reasons why they think what they think.
