A Great First Day Back

It was a great first day back after an extra long February break!  There were a lot of new units that got going today!  First graders began an author study on Dr. Seuss, they began a new math unit, and a new writing unit (writing lab reports) that is integrated in with our new science unit on Force and Motion.  

We started our Force and Motion unit by reading a book called Newton and Me, which introduced the concepts of pushes and pulls.  We then went on a "motion walk" (we  had to improvise due to frigid weather) by watching a video full of movements.  Throughout the viewing, we recorded what we saw moving, and what the force was that was causing the object to move.  

Animal Research

First Graders have finished their animal research teaching books.  As a culminating activity and celebration of our hard work we also created a VoiceThread where students shared some of their favorite facts about their animal.

Continuing Our Animal Research

First graders are continuing to work hard researching their animals and collecting a multitude of interesting facts!  As they collect their facts, they are writing and creating their own nonfiction teaching books.  The books are organized into different sections or chapters, and they are incorporating some of the nonfiction text features that we have been learning about during our reading block.
