Adding Multiples of Ten
First graders have been building 2-digit numbers with Base 10 blocks (strips of 10s and single 1s) to see concrete representations of the numbers they are working with. Today they added a multiple of 10 onto a 2-digit number (26 + 30) and practiced counting "off the decade" using their strips of 10s to find their totals.

Ten Plus
Our math activity today focused on thinking about numbers to 20 in terms of how they relate to 10, and determining equivalent expressions (using a 10) for a given expression (eg., 7+8=10+5). Students used number cards, turned two over to make an equation and then figured out how it related to the number ten.

Roll Tens
Students played a game in math today which involved thinking about 10s and 100. On each turn they rolled 2 dice, found the sum, added that amount of cubes to their mats, found their new total of cubes, and then figured out how many more they would need to collect in order to get to 100! There was a lot of great math thinking going on in our classroom this morning!!
