Sunflowers, Contractions, Expanded Notation and More! Highlights from the Week of May 23, 2022

Sunflowers, Contractions, Expanded Notation and More!

Highlights from the Week of May 23, 2022

As the year winds down First Graders continue to be busy learning and growing.

Here is a glimpse at what we have been up to recently.

  • We have continued working on writing our opinion about various things, most recently our favorite painting (out of a choice of 4) and our favorite books (aka Book Reviews!)

  • During math we have been adding multiples of 10 to 2-digit numbers, learned about expanded notation, and have begun to add two 2-digit numbers together (like 24 + 35).

  • We have learned about contractions during Word Study.

  • During Reading Workshop we are learning about story elements and identifying the characters, setting, problem, solution and the lesson or message in the story.

  • We have learned about the phases of the moon and the patterns in the sky during the day and night.

  • We continued our year long theme of kindness by talking more about the spreading of kindness, even as far as to other places around the world, and sending the message of peace by planting sunflowers.  Some of our sunflowers have become part of our school community sunflower garden which is part of a state-wide initiative to show love and support to the people of Ukkraine. We had a very special time planting our seedlings and some seeds with Mrs. Self’s preschoolers.

  • We earned a school-wide celebration that was popsicle day!
