Fraction Fun!

In first grade we have been finishing up with our measurement unit in math.  This week students explored and learned about fractions as equal parts of a whole.  First graders learned about halves, fourths and thirds.  We ended the week by making our own fraction books!

Measuring Animal Jumps (Last Week)

Last week first graders continued working on their measurement skills by measuring different animal jumps.  They worked with partners to measure tape lengths that represented various animal jumps.  Their units of measurement were craft sticks.  After completing the measurements,
they then needed to put all of the jumps in order from longest to shortest.

Learning About Fractions

This week first graders have begun to learn about fractions.  They have been exploring halves, fourths and even thirds!  They have been introduced to the numerical representation of these fractions, but do not need to be able to write or use them.  The most important thing for them to remember is that fractions are always "fair shares".
