Our Hopes and Dreams

First graders spent some important time thinking about their hopes and dreams for this school year, and what they would like to work hard at and continue to grow and get stronger in. We read some great stories to help get us thinking about this and then created a fun lightning bug project to remind us that if we work hard and try our best, our “light will shine” and we will be successful!  I can’t wait to see how these amazing kiddos grow and shine this year in their learning!!

Welcome Fall!

We did a little science exploration to help welcome the new season of Fall. What better time to start learning about how and why leaves change color during this time of year!  We took our learning  outside to examine the leaves around us, and to do the magical and beautiful activity that is leaf rubbing!  Our First graders really loved it!!

Stories All Around Us

As we began our first writing unit of the year we started to think about ideas and where to find them.  We read two great stories to help us get started with brainstorming topics for our own writing. We will be writing personal narratives or “Small Moments” from our lives. We discovered that ideas for stories are all around us! From what we ate for breakfast that morning to the butterfly we saw at recess!

A Tree Can Be...

We spent some time in the forest this week thinking about what "A Tree Can Be..." as well as doing a little exploration in the woods.  We used our Nature Backpacks and Nature Journals for the first time!

Week Three!

We had another wonderful week getting to know each other, learning more routines, and we even started thinking about our Hopes and Dreams for our First Grade year (stay tuned for more on that next week!).  Take a look below at some snippets from our week.

We read some great books this week that focused on thinking about ourselves and how incredible and amazing each of us is!  We then each created an "All About Me" page which we will put all together as a Big Book for our classroom that we can enjoy all year long!

We read the classic story, The Little Engine That Could, and learned about perseverance and the power of giving it your best effort even when things seem new and hard.  "I think I can, I think I can, I think I can..."

We played some fun math games that had us counting, adding, and comparing numbers.

We continued to learn about Whole Body Listening and played some fun games to practice our listening skills!

We got a great start on setting up our routines and expectations for Reading Workshop!  We learned about the importance of "Read-to-Self" and started practicing and building our stamina!!  We even got to shop for books to put in our own book bins!

We had our first Guidance lesson with Ms. Spaulding!

We spent some time in our outdoor learning spaces and talked more about respecting nature.  We made nature bracelets with special beads that each represent a different aspect of nature.

Looking forward to another great week with this wonderful class next week!

REMINDER!  School picture day is Monday 9/13!!
