News of A New Playground, Soil Soup, and Going on Adventures with the Characters in our Books!!
Highlights from the Week of April 25, 2022
We had a terrific first week back after our April vacation. It is hard to believe that we are now in the home stretch of First Grade!
Our week was full of new learning and fun adventures!
We:
Had an All School Morning Meeting with Mr. Rector who surprised us with an announcement of a new playground in the works! He invited all students to share their hopes and dreams with him about what should be included in this new structure and setup.
Started a new writing unit which will focus on writing our opinions on many different things. This week we learned about the difference between a fact and an opinion.
Began a new reading unit during which we will delve deep into the genre of fiction, go on adventures with our characters, and learn all about the elements and organization of fiction stories. This week we learned about taking a “sneak peak” to get ready to read, as well as paying attention to the "where and when” during a story
Learned a little about soil and made “soil soup”. We found out that of all of the various ingredients that go into making soil, time is one of the most important things! And learned about the importance of earthworms!
Started a new math unit that will focus on place value, specifically tens and ones. This week we built numbers with base ten blocks and added and subtracted groups of tens.
Did an Earth Day project and made promises to do something to help keep the earth healthy.
Went on a virtual field trip to the International Space Station!
