Measuring With Kid Steps

As we continue our unit on measurement, students experienced measuring lengths of tape with their own feet!  Students worked in pairs to ensure that someone was always watching for accurate measuring.  They were all very careful to start "even Steven" with the end of the tape, and to always touch heel to toe as they counted their footsteps along the length of tape.

Measuring with Linker Cubes

Today first graders began a new math unit on measurement. We spent our first lesson learning about how to accurately measure the length of objects using linker cubes as our unit of measurement.

Nonfiction Conventions

First graders have started learning about nonfiction text conventions.  These conventions help readers access the information more readily. So far they have learned how the following conventions help the reader: photographs, labels, and headings. These photos show students looking for examples of labels in various books, and then recording one in their own convention booklet.
