Preparing for Our Writing Celebration

First grade writers have come to the end of their nonfiction unit and are preparing for a big celebration! After working incredibly hard on their animal research and writing, they are doing a couple of final pieces to go with their big project.

We hope you'll be able to join us this Friday at 8:30 for our big Authors Celebration!

Fact Families

First graders have been learning about the concept of "fact families" this week. When you have a set of three related numbers then you can use them to make four true equations: two addition equations and two subtraction equations. Pretty cool stuff!

Fraction Flags

To continue on with our journey into the land of fractions, first graders explored halves and fourths with rectangles through making fraction flags! Initially they practiced dividing rectangles into halves and fourths in their workbooks, but then were able to create thier very own Fraction Flag!
Not as tasty as pizzas, but still pretty fun!

Pizza Fractions?!

First graders jumped right into their unit on fractions by learning about wholes, halves, and fourths... of a pizza!  Not only did they learn about the fractions, they got to taste them, too!!

First we learned about this new concept.

Then we designed our own pizzas on paper plates.

Next, we created our own real pizzas using our paper plate plans.

And finally... We got to eat them!!!!
YUM!!!!!  Fractions are delicious!!

W.O.W.

First graders added another "word of the week" (W.O.W.) to their growing collection of words.  The word was 'dependable', which we learned is an important thing to be!  We read Horton Hears A Who and clearly learned what it means to be dependable through Hortons actions in the story. This story also helped kick off our mini author study of Dr. Seuss!

Snow Play Day!

We all enjoyed a perfect day for some extra playing in the snow!  The sun was shining and the snow was perfect for building and sledding!!
