Today was an exciting day!  We finally finished our "all about" books!  In the morning, we did the final steps of publishing, and by the afternoon we were ready to share our amazing writing with Mrs. Hacketts first graders.  

Families, stay tuned!  We are planning an Authors Tea in the next couple of weeks, and you will all be invited!

Measuring Keepers

Last week we began a new math unit on measurement. First graders measured many different classroom objects like books, folders, and glue bottles. They measured with different nonstandard units including linker cubes, paper clips and tiles. Today students measured fish!  They had a very specific mission - to figure out whether or not their fish were long enough to be "keepers".  Students worked very hard to measure carefully and accurately to determine which perch, mackerel and alewife fish should be kept or tossed back!

Publishing our "All About" Books

We are working hard to publish our "all about" books on animals so that we can share them with an audience soon!  Today we got creative and designed covers for our books!

Official Word Detectives!

Well, we did it!  First graders have successfully completed all five missions that they were challenged with!  The S.S.D.A. Even sent official badges to them!  

As exciting as this is, the students' hard work is not yet done!  Will it ever be?!  Letters continue to arrive from the S.S.D.A. with tips for reading longer, tougher, and trickier words in our books.

Honoring Martin Luther King, Jr

Last week first graders learned about Martin Luther king, Jr. through reading some books and by going to a school wide assembly.  After leaning about Dr. King's important work and his life's dream, first graders wrote their own dream for the world in which we live.  We can learn a lot from their dreams!
