Happy Last Day!!
It has been an incredible year in First grade!! We ended our last day together by getting and signing autographs with all of the 1st grade classes as well as any additional teachers and staff that we could entice to join in! It was a lot of fun! We then gathered for a photo to show off our newly created end-of-first grade t-shirts. Happy Summer!!!!

Estimating Beans
Today first graders worked with a partner to estimate how many beans were in their cup. After making their estimates and counting to find the actual amount, they then had to make an estimate of how many beans in our whole classroom (everyone's cups all together)!!!! There were 9 cups of beans in all, and they all had about the same amount in them. We shared our estimates and then worked together to find the actual amount of beans in our class! Wow! That was some pretty sophisticated math thinking!! I think they are all ready for 2nd grade!!!

Estimating with Lentils and Popcorn Kernels
First Graders learned about estimating using lentils and popcorn kernels on Wednesday. They filled a small cube with the lentils or kernels and made an estimate of how many the cube could hold. They then had to count them in two different ways to find the actual total and see how close their estimates were. Estimating was harder than they thought it would be!
