Word of the Week

We have started a new weekly vocabulary activity: Word of the Week aka W.O.W.  Each week we will learn a new Tier Two word (a word that is not commonly used in spoken language) which will be introduced with a book to help illustrate its meaning and definition.  Students will keep a journal of all of their WOW words and as a class we will challenge ourselves to try and use the word in our conversations or writing.

Snowman Math

Recently first graders had some fun creating their own math equation and a snowman scene to go with it!  Stop by and check them out!

Word Problems

First graders have been working very hard on story problems recently. The newest challenge has been having to decipher whether the problem involves addition or subtraction to solve.  To help us out, we started charting some of the key words that would help us know which operation is being called for. We have also been discussing the idea of subtraction as being "the difference between" and not just "take away".  Super mathematical thinkers!

Word Detectives Mission #2

First graders received their second mission of our Word Detective unit - to look CLOSELY across the WHOLE word!  As we are getting to be stronger readers,we are running into more challenging words and this becomes even more important!  We practiced doing this with some words in the book Shark Detective. We have a class full of amazing sleuths!

Word Detectives!

First graders have started a new reading unit and it's all about how to be a word detective!!  It all began with a letter from the SSDA, also known as the Super Secret Detective Agency, asking for the help of all first graders. The students accepted the challenge set forth, and got started on the first mission!  We had a very exciting reading workshop as all students got to work doing their detective work while reading their books independently. We can't wait for mission #2!!

New Year's Resolutions

We had a great first day back after the holiday break!  Starting a new year is, of course, the perfect time to make a resolution, so that's just what first graders did today. First, we read
Squirrel's New Year's Resolution by Pat Miller, and then we got to work thinking of our own resolutions.  First graders are thinking of three different resolutions: one for school, one for home, and a personal one.  Watch for them to appear in the hallway - we should be finished with them soon!
