Studying Stems
On Wednesday of this week first graders learned more about the importance of, and jobs of, the stems of plants. Ask them to explain! We then set up an experiment to help us see one of the stem's jobs in action. We took celery and white daisies and put them in colored water over night. We had learned that the stems act as straws and suck water up into the rest of the parts of the plant, so we predicted that we might see some color up in the leaves and petals the next day. And we were right!

A Surprise Visitor!
Our long lost friend, Mrs. Kilbride, surprised us with a visit! Mrs. Kilbride worked in our classroom from September through March, when a different opportunity came her way. We were so excited to see her again! She was the mystery guest reader, too!

Convincing Our Readers
We have come to the end of our opinion writing unit, and we are in the midst of sharing our published peices with each other. Our goal? To convince others to try something new, like see a movie, play with a certain toy, read a specific book! I never knew that first graders could be so convincing!!
Our Bean Plants Have Grown!
First graders made their final observation of their bean plants before taking them home. My, have they grown!! Hopefully they will all produce at least a few beans for you all to enjoy.

Examining Our Leaves
After collecting quite a variety of leaves yesterday, first graders were able to closely examine them and learn more about the important job they do for their plants. Ask your child to tell you what these amazing leaves can do!
