Author Celebration
First graders have finished their first writing unit, Small Moments (personal narratives). To cellebrate all of their hard work throughout the unit, both first grade classes got together and shared their published stories with each other. There was so much excitement and pride in the air as they rotated from partner to partner reading their own pieces to each other! Bravo first graders!!
Claims and Evidence
First graders listened to a book called Horrible Bear and then did a character study on the girl in the story. What they were actually doing was making claims and giving evidence of their claims from the text! The chart below is completely the students' thinking - I was just the scribe! We have some amazing thinkers in this class!! Exciting stuff!

Publishing Our Small Moment Stories
We have come to the end of our first writing unit, Small Moments, or personal narratives. Students chose their favorite piece, and worked hard at revising and editing for the past couple of days. The next step is to complete their illustrations, and cover. As a celebration of our hard work we we will get together with Mrs. Hackett's class on Friday and share our books with each other.
Virtual Shapes
First graders have been enjoying working with virtual pattern block shapes this week. Using the "Shape Tool" on the NCTM Illuminations site, they created their own designs with between 10 and 20 blocks. Then they printed them out, and will trade with peers to try and recreate the design with real blocks.

There Was An Old Lady
During Reading Workshop we read a book called A Little Old Lady Who Wasn't Afraid of Anything. It was a fun read allowing students to participate in making the sounds and repeating the sequence of the events throughout the story. Afterward, they put pictures from the story in the correct sequence.
