A Little More Norway
During our visit to Norway, first graders learned about the traditional celebration of Santa Lucia. This tradition is celebrated in other Scandinavian countries as well.
Flying to Norway
Last week our class began a trip around the world to see how others are celebrating during this time of year. We are also honing our mapping skills, tracking our trip on a world map. Our first stop was Norway. During the "inflight" video we learned a little about the culture, the land, and the reindeer that live there. We also learned about some traditions that are celebrated at this time of year, like that of Santa Lucia.

Passport Applications
Have you heard?! First graders are about to embark on a trip around the world! As a fun extension to our unit on community, we will expand our horizons to the world community and visit some other countries to see how they are celebrating during this time of year. The first step: applying for a passport!! Fingers are crossed that all approved and we can begin our travels soon!
Stay tuned!
Getting Ready...
We finished our last nonfiction feature today: cutaways. First graders now have a booklet that they can refer to while writing nonfiction "all about" books.

Community Helpers
Stop by our hallway and check out our beautiful mural of Richmond complete with a variety of hand-crafted community helpers! The back-drop art work was done by our own Ms Hartley, but the community helpers are works of art by our amazingly talented first graders!! Students each chose their own community helper to create. They had to write about that helper's role in the community and why they are important.
