Crayon Puzzles

Recently in math, first graders have been working hard on a set of problems called "Crayon Puzzles". These are story problems that involve having a given number of crayons, and figuring out how many of each color you could have. The tricky part is that different problems have different stipulations that the mathematician must be careful to follow and figure out.

Can You Make A Ball Go 2 Different Distances?

First graders did their final activity for our Force and Motion unit last week.  They were challenged with the question "how can you make a ball go two different distances?" and had to come up with a plan for how to do just that.  Students used all of the knowledge that they gained throughout our study of force and motion, including concepts such as pushes and pulls, gravity, slopes of a ramp, and friction. After writing up their plan, they made their predictions, and then actually carried it out to see if their plan would in fact work. Wow!  What amazing scientists!!

If I Were The Lorax...

After reading The Lorax by Dr. Seuss, students came up with their own ideas of how they could help the earth.  Here are a few of their projects, but please come visit our full display of them out in the hallway by our room!

Word of the Week: Persevere

Our most recent W.O.W. (Word of the week) was persevere. We talked about this word a lot while reading Dr. Seuss' book, The Lorax. While there are many other important themes in this story to discuss, this book provided a wonderful example of what it means to persevere through something and give it your all.
