First graders will walk into a a classroom on the first day of school that looks quite different then when they first visited it in June on Move-Up Day. I have been hard at work over the past few weeks setting up and redesigning our room to incorporate flexible seating! Research has shown that there are many benefits to providing students with a variety of seating options, most importantly to allow for, and encourage them to be the best learners that they can be. According to an article published by Edutopia, flexible seating provides students with choice, allows students to have increased movement in their day and thus burn excessenergy, improves metabolism, increases motivation and engagement, creates better oxygen flow to the brain, and improves core strength and overall posture.
That being said, the first 2-3 weeks in our room will involve a lot of exploration, discussions, and learning about all of the various options. Everyone will try out all of the different seats and figure out for themselves which ones work best for them.
I will keep you updated as to how this is all going, and hopefully your child will too! I am so looking forward to implementing this new approach and to be able to give all learners more choice in how they like to physically be while doing their best work.
