During our most recent time in the forest, we focused on noticing the variety of trees that grow around our school and in our outdoor classroom space. Students observed different leaf shapes and different bark textures throughout the woods. They did some bark rubbings and even tried to identify the various types of trees they observed.
We also read a wonderful and true story called The Tree Lady by H. Joseph Hopkins which was about a woman who lived a very long time ago who loved trees. She dedicated much of her life to researching and then planting trees that would grow and thrive in the desert climate of San Diego. The park that she was instrumental in creating, Balboa Park, is still vibrant and open today! What amazing inspiration for these young minds!
