Our Last Week of 2020

We had a wonderful final week or so of this year, 2020!  Here are some snippets of what we were up to.

We had a special guest reader pop in TWO times before our break!

Can you tell who it is??  He read us Night Tree by Eve Bunting and Pout-Pout Fish by Deborah Diesen.

As part of our outdoor learning as well as learning about the winter solstice, we made some beautiful bird feeders to help our feathered friends and probably some other creatures as well!

Then we went out to the woods to hang them.

And we created some beautiful snowflake art to welcome the winter!

See you all in 2021!!!!

Learning About Different Holidays

Recently First Graders have spent some time learning a little bit about different holidays that are celebrated around the world during this time of year.  We have been talking about the importance of light in many holiday celebrations and traditions.  We learned about Hanukkah and some of the traditions that go with that holiday.  We sang (well, listened to!) some fun songs and learned how to play the dreidel game.  We also learned a bit about St. Lucia Day celebrated on December 13 in Sweeden.  We then made the candle crowns that are part of that tradition.   Next week we will learn about the Winter Solstice!

The Fiddler of the Northern Lights

We read The Fiddler of the Northern Lights and followed up with some learning about what the northern lights are!  We then listened to inspirational quiet music with videos of the northern lights dancing across the skies, while painting our own versions.  It was a magical moment in our room!!!!
