Highlights From the Week of 10/25/21

What a great week in first Grade! We did a lot of learning and had some fun, too!

Some highlights:

- finished reviewing all of the "short" vowel sounds (ask your child about our vowel song!)
- learned the reading strategy "Flippy Dolphin" (try the long and the short vowel sounds when trying to figure out a tricky word)
- worked on stretching the sounds out and writing as many sounds as we can when trying to spell new words
- learned about the importance of leaving spaces between our words (ask your child about the "Space Man"!)
- learned some new "Snap Words" (or, did, was, had)
- read a book call Pumpkin Heads by Wendell Minor, and created our own
- did many activities (during Word Work time) with CVC words (consonant-vowel-consonant) focusing on all of the short vowel sounds
- started our third unit in math (focuses on number sense)
- learned the Doubles Facts and practiced with a fun set of puzzles that we brought home
-did some fun Halloween math with ghosts and pumpkins
- spent some time in the forest listening to and then acting out the story The Little Old Lady Who Wasn't Afraid of Anything by Linda Williams
- did a sequencing activity of the same story
- read Tops and Bottoms by Janet Stevens to begin learning about vegetable farms

Triangles and Quadrilaterals

First graders spent some time this week exploring, sorting, and creating a variety of triangles and quadrilaterals. That’s right!  I said quadrilaterals!! They made both of them on dot paper by circling 3 or 4 dots and then connecting them with straight lines,  as well as with rubber bands on geoboards. They also continued sorting shapes by specific attributes.
