Math update 5/4/15
Over the past few math lessons first graders have been working hard on building their understanding of place value. At the end of last week they played a game called "Cover A Flat". Students used Base 10 Blocks to build numbers as they rolled dice and collected more and more single cubes. Base 10 Blocks are a great tool as they provide concrete models of numbers for the students, clearly showing how many groups of 10s and 1s there are in each number. Students played this game with a partner. As they accumulated the single cubes they had to continuously trade them in whenever they had 10 or more, and keep track of their total amount after each turn.
