First graders have begun learning about nonfiction writing and reading. We have been learning about nonfiction features that help the reader better access the information. Some examples of these are photographs, labels, captions, headings, maps, etc. Students learn about the features and then search for examples of them in their books. They also create pages to help them remember what each one's purpose is and how they help the reader. The second goal of learning about these is that students will use them in their own nonfiction writing.
