As we finished up our "travels around the world" before the holiday break, we spent some time outside learning about the Winter Solstice and were able to do it right on the shortest day of the year!
All four of the first-grade classes at RES were able to split into two groups and experienced two different activities.
We learned a little about how the winter solstice is celebrated in Sweden and had a guest speaker to help us out: Mr. Dan Hermansson, part of our staff in the MMUUSD district. We even got to have a fire and sang some songs around the campfire!
While one group was learning about the Winter Solstice, the other group was creating some special treats for our local wildlife. Students strung some cheerios and cranberries onto wire making little wreaths to hang in the trees. The intent was to help our animal friends as they are also preparing for the winter months ahead.
