News of A New Playground, Soil Soup, and Going on Adventures with the Characters in our Books!!

Highlights from the Week of April 25, 2022

We had a terrific first week back after our April vacation.  It is hard to believe that we are now in the home stretch of First Grade!

Our week was full of new learning and fun adventures!

We:

  • Had an All School Morning Meeting with Mr. Rector who surprised us with an announcement of a new playground in the works!  He invited all students to share their hopes and dreams with him about what should be included in this new structure and setup.

  • Started a new writing unit which will focus on writing our opinions on many different things.  This week we learned about the difference between a fact and an opinion.

  • Began a new reading unit during which we will delve deep into the genre of fiction,  go on adventures with our characters, and learn all about the elements and organization of fiction stories. This week we learned about taking a “sneak peak” to get ready to read, as well as paying attention to the "where and when” during a story

  •  Learned a little about soil and made “soil soup”.  We found out that of all of the various ingredients that go into making soil, time is one of the most important things! And learned about the importance of earthworms!

  • Started a new math unit that will focus on place value, specifically tens and ones.  This week we built numbers with base ten blocks and added and subtracted groups of tens.

  • Did an Earth Day project and made promises to do something to help keep the earth healthy.

  • Went on a virtual field trip to the International Space Station!

Magic E, Missing Addends, A Tea Party, and more!

Highlights from the week of April 11, 2022

We have had a wonderful stretch between February break and this April break.  The students have been working so hard and learning many new things.  They have recently realized that they are almost second graders!

We had a special time in the forest celebrating our hard work with a tea party!  A beautiful day and a beautiful way to end the week!

Over the past week we:

  • Had guidance with Ms. Spaulding and talked about what to do if someone touches our bodies in an uncomfortable and inappropriate way, and who we can (and should) tell - the trusted adults in our lives; we also identified a trusted adult and made paper dolls to represent them

  • Continued Practicing using the magic “e”

  • Worked on math problems with an unknown change (missing addend or subtrahend) and making false equations true

  • Had a school-wide celebration: Double Recess

  • Had a tea party in the forest!

  • Observed and sketched the buds on the trees for a second time - we noticed a little bit of green popping through!

  • Had a sing-a-long with Mrs. Hackett’s class

  • Had a Mystery Guest Reader as a reward for another 60 hours of reading homework!

  • Read The Salamander Room and drew our most vivid mental images

  • Practiced reading our animal research books to prepare for… our Animal Research Exhibit and invited our families in!
