Spreading A Little Happiness

First graders have been learning a lot about the importance and value of our individual uniqueness, our differences and similarities, as well as the the importance of treating each others with kindness and respect, as we work to build our classroom community.  We have connected many of these themes with our mini unit on rocks through the use of some amazing books.  Recently all first graders got together and listened to one of those amazing books, Ishi by Akiko Yabuki.  This wonderfully simple book encompasses all of those themes along with the message of spreading happiness to others.  Through simple acts, we can change how we feel as well as how others feel.
After listening to the story, first graders created their own Ishi rocks and did a little spreading of happiness right outside our school!  Look carefully in the stones around the entrance to RES the next time you visit.  You may just find a little happiness!!
