Fiber Farms

We had our third visit from Miss Virginia this week and learned about fiber farms!  We learned about three types of fiber farms:  sheep, alpaca, and rabbit.  Did you know that out of those three types of fiber, sheep wool is the least warm, then alpaca fiber, and the rabbit fiber (angora) is the warmest?!  First graders learned about all of the steps from harvesting the fiber to the final product of a sweater.  Students were able to feel some "raw" fiber, as well as compare sweaters made from the three different fibers.
Our session ended with some taste testing of three dairy products: cottage cheese, cheddar cheese, and mozzarella.
